It’s easy to suspend Rome for this. He’s the Canucks 6th d-man and caused serious injury to one of the Bruins best players with a late hit to the head, something the NHL wants badly to get rid of. It’s one thing to suspend Burrows who is a 1st line ‘star’ for the Canucks. Everyone knows he bit Bergeron but the NHL cannot come out and say that it wasn’t worth a suspension in the Stanley Cup Finals – they can now make an example out of Rome to appease their critics and it’s still a good trade off for Vancouver.
The rest of the series for sure. Rome jumped into the hit and clearly targeted Horton’s head. The whole neanderthal head-down, admiring the pass argument that Gaston and many others make definitely does not apply here. Not only was this hit so late that it could’ve been called interference, there was primary contact to the head in my opinion. Rome should be suspended for the rest of the series, but will probably only receive two games from the NHL.
It’s a hit to the head. Like it or not in that situation the NHL has decided that the onus is on the hitting player to refrain, however much you feel the injured player is in the wrong for not protecting himself.
I don’t think protecting players from those kinds of hits in this manner detracts from the game. Players will still feel compelled to keep their heads up to minimize the risk of head injury.
After all, pedestrians have the absolute right of way inside a cross walk, but when you cross the street in a cross walk you’ll be looking both ways.
I think the hit is a textbook case of rule 48 and will be stunned if Rome doesn’t get a multi-game suspension.
Watching it in slow-motion and in real time is not the same thing… way late? I might have counted 4 after the puck was gone… At the end of the day you have to keep and know where you’re at on the ice. He was in one of those area that if you are not carefull you’re going to get creamed, and he did.
Ya the hit was late but not worth 4 games…if Horton would have got up there might have been a 2 min penalty at most…they made the call based on his injury which is crap!!!
Rome shouldn’t be suspended in my opinion. Horton has a responsibility here to know where he’s at on the ice and to keep his head up. I’ve only played my hockey minor and not Admiring your pass like that is taught in pee-wee… And as a defencemen you’re are programed to kill idiots like that! :-p
Players have been suspended for A LOT less than this hit, plus it WAS late. It is however the playoffs. NHL has come out with some pretty straight forward guidelines for blindside hits. Interesting to see what happens. It could go either way. But I am pretty sure the NHL wants to send a clear message. In any case Aaron Rome is a marked man. Hockey is “self-policing” sport even in the minors
Suspend him, Not like it effects the Canucks they will just insert a 4.2 million dollar healthy scratch in Keith Ballard!

That’s a load of crap Gaston, the hit was late, he passed the puck well before the hit. Suspend him.

9 10ths of a second late to be exact.
