CBC Video: My take on Staged Fighting
I made a video on staged fighting in the NHL for CBC’s Hockey Night Online with Gord Stellick and Andi Petrillo on March 22, 2012. The Staged Fighting segment starts at 14:40, and my video starts at 15:54, but watch the whole episode!
I still say that there is a simple solution to both the fighting question and the lack-of-respect issue: lose 3 skaters per team. Think about it: fewer ‘staged’ fights, because you will need all hands on deck; less chippiness, because there will be an extra 15:00 of icetime that the now-nine forwards will have to fill and 10 minutes in the sin bin means that one of the other horses is going to be playing way too many minutes (decreasing his effectiveness).
If you’re worried about injuries, well, you could designate a ‘taxi squad’ of players that can only play if someone is injured. Give them a couple minutes to warm up (like a replacement goalie gets) and then off they go.
Of course, the union would never go for it…
i can see keith getting suspended but when you look at sedins hit, there’s no way you can say that wasn’t targeting the head when keith’s head snapped back
This is kind of a nice setup. Usually I only watch CBC stuff on HNIC and they are constantly pressed for time and rushing through everything. This was able to keep my attention for the whole video and I found it pretty interesting.
